Top 10 Sexiest Jobs

The headline on Time Warner's site caught my eye. I thought it was interesting enough to post here.

10 Sexiest Jobs
Anthony Balderrama, CareerBuilder.com writer

You’re at a party. You spot someone across the room and you make your way toward each other. Things are going well, so after some small talk you ask, “What do you do for a living?” The answer you receive determines if you exchange phone numbers or say goodnight.

Whether or not we admit it, what people do for a living affects their sex appeal. A recent CareerBuilder.com survey asked participants what occupations they consider the sexiest. You might be surprised that the top picks weren’t necessarily based on salary or looks.

Here are the 10 sexiest jobs, according to the survey.

1. Entertainer/Model
Why they’re sexy: Entertainers and models make a living by looking good, so you can bet they’re easy on the eyes. Their dedication to their dream in such a competitive industry is also attractive.
Where you’ll find them: Supermodels are on the runways in Paris, Milan and New York or at photo shoots in major cities around the world. Entertainers can find work in any city, but New York and Los Angeles certainly have the best opportunities.
Pros: They travel the world, are famous and have huge paychecks.
Cons: Competition is fierce and there’s a lot of pressure to maintain their looks.

2. Cocktail Waitress
Why they’re sexy: Although it might not seem like an obvious top pick, consider the fact that the waitress is probably dressed in a short skirt and bringing you drinks, which never hurt anybody’s sex appeal.
Where you’ll find them: At any establishment that serves alcohol — casinos, bars, clubs, restaurants and concert halls.
Pros: A good cocktail waitress can make a killing on tips alone, especially in an upscale establishment.
Cons: They have to deal with drunken customers and they often work in smoke-filled bars and clubs.

3. Athlete
Why they’re sexy: Professional athletes are likely in good — no, great — shape. Not to mention they’ve probably been practicing their sport since childhood, so you know they’re disciplined and goal-oriented.
Where you’ll find them: When they’re not training, they’re on the field (or rink or court whatever venue they perform at).
Pros: The chance to be famous and internationally adored is pretty nice.
Cons: The odds of making it big are slim.

4. Firefighter
Why they’re sexy: Firefighters are brave and selfless. Who wouldn’t find that attractive?
Where you’ll find them: Everywhere. Every city needs firefighters, though some smaller towns have volunteer squads.
Pros: They save lives and serve the community.
Cons: They risk their lives every day.

5. Cowboy
Why they’re sexy: Few archetypes are as engrained in our culture as the cowboy. He’s masculine, chivalrous and everything else we admired in Western movies.
Where you’ll find them: On ranches in rural areas. Texas, Oklahoma, Wyoming and California are the most traditional examples of cowboy country.
Pros: It’s a quiet life away from the city.
Cons: The have to work with their hands and outdoors, regardless of the season.

6. Nurse
Why they’re sexy: Nurses keep you comfortable, make sure you’re healthy and bring you morphine when you’re hurting. That they devote their lives to caring for others and understand all that medical jargon only makes them sexier.
Where you’ll find them: In hospitals, your doctor’s office and other health care facilities.
Pros: They care for patients, watch them get better and put a baby in its parents' arms for the first time.
Cons: The hours are long; patients and their families can be demanding and there are plenty of sad events they have to witness, too.

7. Artist
Why they’re sexy: The average artist is doing what makes them happy, not what will bring them fame or money — and that’s pretty sexy. How many occupations can you say that about?
Where you’ll find them: Everywhere. Painters, photographers, sculptors and other types of artists work in their own studios, in offices for ad agencies or on location for photo shoots.
Pros: They spend their days being creative and get paid for it.
Cons: The paying work that’s easiest to find is often boring and doesn’t allow artists to express themselves.

8. Military Professional
Why they’re sexy: Well, they’ve got the ultimate uniform, if you’re into that sort of thing. The military also instills a sense of discipline, so you can count on them to be responsible and dependable.
Where you’ll find them: On military bases throughout the country.
Pros: Job security and good pay.
Cons: Long-term commitment and willingness to relocate frequently, which means sticking with a job no matter where it takes you.

9. Construction Worker
Why they’re sexy: Didn’t you see that soft drink commercial where all the women stare out their window to watch the construction worker take off his shirt?
Where you’ll find them: Wherever a new building is going up, a house is being renovated or a road is being repaved.
Pros: Their job keeps them in shape and their hard work is often rewarded with a nice salary.
Cons: Performing manual labor every day is tiring and sometimes dangerous.

10. TV Anchor/Personality
Why they’re sexy: Maybe it’s the way they talk with authority, seem to know everything and make you feel like you’re best friends. Or maybe it’s the fact that you don’t know if they’re really wearing pants under that desk.
Where you’ll find them: On your TV in the morning, at noon and at night.
Pros: They get to be on television and get the news before anybody else.
Cons: They can spend years working in small cities before they get a job in a major market.

Brady Quinn Plays!!!!

Brady Quinn played today. I was shocked. Pleased, but shocked. I never thought Romeo would put him in given that he has been pissy ever since the hold out; Romeo that is, not Quinn. Brady was poised, confident, and reasonablely accurate. I do not understand why they pulled him because Anderson was not doing well at all, the game was not on the line, and Quinn was, as I stated above, effective. I believe Quinn will win the starting quarterback next season. If he is not, it will not be because he was not the best man for the job, it will be because Romeo is not the best man for the job.

On a lighter note, it was good to see Browns fullback Charles Ali do well today. He has been a favorite of mine since the HOF Meet and Greet where he took the time to talk to my kids. He even read Jason's football book he made for Quinn. How could I not root for a guy like that?

Arnes Battle (WR 49ers) looked good as well. He is a former ND player who I believe was a senior when Quinn was a freshman. It was nice to see him talking to Quinn after the game. It is what one would expect from former Notre Dame teammates.

--------------

Now we wait to see if the Colts can win. I like Peyton Manning. From what I heard he will only be playing for a short time in order to keep him healthy for the playoffs.
I had to laugh while we were watching the Patriot vs. Giants game because there were several Manning commercials and not one of Tom Brady. Tom is an amazing quarterback and yet he not beloved like Manning. Why is that? I can only guess it is a result of poor image. Who wants their kid looking up to a guy who knocks up supermodels? Ok, some might. Well, quite a few might. I take that back. Who wants a guy who does not have that boy next door charm to sell them on credit card debt and child sized footballs? I admit to being fond of Peyton. There is something darn likable about him that I just can't put my finger on. Tom does nothing for me. Go figure.

Nerf War: A new family tradition

The day began with stockings. No surprises except this year's potato in the toe of the stocking was sporting a smiley face. Gifts were opened in record time. Soon the family came and went. The girls loved their Steelers number 7 jerseys and funky animal socks. The boys loved everything. The biggest hit though was the Nerf cross bow my brother-in-law got for J. I think Keith was more excited than anyone to give it a go. Before we knew it, every male in the house was dodging and shooting nerf darts from it or the Nerf Maverick Rev-6s I bought the boys this year (with a 30 pack of velcro darts). My mother-in-law's husband, who could not actively participate because of his leg, smiled as he collected darts in his pocket as the guys scrambled for ammo. Us girls tried to stay behind enemy lines but were defenseless when they decided we were the easiest target. The madness continued for at least a half hour. Oh how I wish I had a video camera. Good times.

By early evening everyone was gone. I finished cleaning up and tried out some of the new toys as David played the ps2 with the boys. I also watched Charlie Brown's Christmas (I have it on DVD). It is one of my favorites.

Death comes in twos (corrected)

Death in twos

This week both my great-great aunt (92) and neighbor (91) passed away.

Mrs. Navar

Mrs. Navar had been our neighbor for exactly four years this week. From the moment we moved in, she made us feel at home. Every Christmas she had her son bring us baked goods, and bags of candy on Halloween for the boys. She was too ill to do it herself. My boys would leave her cards and pictures in her mailbox. Jason even wrote her one of his football books. Friday night, Skip came to our door to let us know she had passed with a plate of cookies and candy in hand. He asked if we could keep an eye on the house during the wake and funeral. Apparently during the last one someone broke in. I did not realize criminals scope out the obits to see when families will be away. I grateful that day passed without incident. Mrs. Navar was a wonderful neighbor. She will be missed.

Aunt Martha

My Aunt Martha was special to me. She was the only member of my dad's side of the family to stay touch when I stopped visitation with my dad. She remembered every birthday and holiday. Never an unkind word was spoken. She sent letters with each card and I did the same in return. When I decided to contact my dad at the age of 18 the letters stopped. I did not understand why at first. Later, it occurred to me that she kept in touch until I made my way back to them. My guess is she did what she thought my grandmother (her niece) would have wanted. The truth is I will never know for certain. What I do know is she was very good to me and that I loved her.

50 to 30 in less than 2 hours

Busy day. David has been eagar to see I am Legend since he saw the first trailer. Devin is finally old enough to see movies like that with him which makes me a happy girl. This is where David would not so subtlely remind me that I no longer a girl. I am a middle aged woman. Sigh.....Anyway, I took Jason and a friend to see Alvin and the Chipmonks. Both movies started and ended at about the same time so it worked out perfectly with us driving only the van. The movie was really enjoyable. I have loved the Chipmonks since I was a little girl, and as I stated before, that was a long time ago. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the movie as well. Jason Lee fits the character Dave perfectly. The animation is well done as expected. I give it two thumbs up (or Chipmonk tails in this case. hehe)David and Devin liked I am Legend. It wasn't quite what they were expecting. I think David was anticipating vampires when in fact the infected humans had something like rabes instead. I will not give any more info than that because I do not want to spoil the movie for anyone.

Leaving the movie we about froze. The temperature went from 50 to 30 in two hours. We headed home for a little bit to kill time before our niece's birthday party. That was just enough time to see the Browns lose. David and Jason seem to feel Anderson deserves some credit for getting the Browns this far. I have to admit that he is better than Frye. I also agree with him that it is better to have Brady sit out the first year and learn; even though it is killing me to know how much better we could be with him in. The biggest problem with Anderson is inconsistency and inaccuracy. These are two issues a first string quarterback should have resolved early on. Oh well. We watched all the way to the bitter end. You cannot expect to move into the playoffs giving up four interceptions. I know there is still a chance, but I do not think we should be in the playoffs at the level we are playing.

Danni's party was fun. We played Rummy and Go Fish. Dev and Miranda played Slap Jack. The pizza and ice cream cake left us bloated and tired. It was a matter of hours before we had the energy to get our coats and head home.

What's been goin' on

Sunday

Devin's glasses broke about a month ago. A thank you to his middle school gym class for that one. He was due to have his eyes checked so it worked out. Of course I picked Sunday, when the storm was to hit, to take him to the optometrist. I planned to have his old lenses put into new frames as a back up pair, but could not find any to fit. We lucked out when we stopped in at Eyemasters because his doctor was able to take him immediately. Devin's eyes are slightly worse than last year, which is common for us near-sighted folk. He also switched contacts from weekly to monthly. I have to watch him carefully to make sure he does not get an infection. When it came time to pick frames, David said to ask the sales clerk for the most durable frames they've got. They recommended Flexon. Devin picked out the Nike flexon in an adult size. They are the best fitting glasses he has had. The display showed the one side of the frame twisted repeatedly around an index finger. The saleswoman stated that they have never had a pair come back to them broken. Let's hope the Curious George of the family doesn't decide to test them out. Afterward, we planned to get a bite but could not agree on a place so we just went home.

The Browns game was on when we returned. I have never seen a snow bowl before. I do not know how the refs were able to keep track of where the ball needed to be or the players. Very happy to see the Browns win.

Out of milk.

Off to the grocery store via the nearly visible road. We were surprised how many people were out considering the snow flying everywhere and ice under what was on the road. We some how managed to make it there and back.

Monday

Eyemasters lab was closed on Sunday which means we had to go back the next day for Dev's glasses. David stayed home with J while Dev and I trekked back to the mall. I was glad to go because there was a new store with Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends items that David didn't want to go into the day before. It only took a few minutes to fit the glasses. They look great and Devin seems to like them. The new store proved too expensive but very cool. On the way out, another new store had Fear the Elf Browns t-shirts we looked at before. It was only $9.99. That price was just right.

Once we were home, David brought up the Christmas tree. It seems we put it up later and later each year. I usually buy each boy a new ornament each year, but the tree is full. I will have to create a new tradition. I learned something as we were rearranging the furniture to accommodate the tree, scented oil from Bath and Body Works will eat through the finish of an end table. I had put some on my decorative pine cones and must have dribbled on the table without realizing it. Lesson learned.

I am everywhere

David took the little van to get an oil change this morning well before any of us were awake. While it was on the lift, he noticed something hanging down. It was my hair. My thyroid condition is to blame. My lovely tresses are sprinkled all over the house, on clothing, in the car, and apparently under the car as well.

First thing this morning, I decided to color my hair, just as I had earlier this week. Tuesday I tried this new touch-up hair color by Revlon that uses a sponge applicator and was supposed to match a number of popular brands. I openned the box to find the color had leaked outside the tube. A good sign that this product was not going to work and yet I still tried it out. As I suspected, it was compromised. My hair remained dark rooted. So yesterday while I was at Marcs to buy starter logs for the fireplace, I bought my Garnier in Intense Auburn. This is my all-time favorite color. It never fails to deliver the most beautiful color I have ever seen. When I finished, I sent Dev down the street with a sample for my friend Laurie who is considering color her hair the same color. The little bit I had left will give her enough for a stand test.

The rest of the day was spent cleaning the bedroom closets of both boys. Jason was done quickly whereas Dev just finish a half hour ago. In his defense, he has two large closets filled with household items as well as his things.

Late afternoon, David and I headed out to Lowes to get a tool set for the fireplace, bucket for the ashes, and new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. We made it home just as the snow began to fall. The fire is going strong. It took a long time for David to get it going yesterday. We had bought green wood, only 3 months old. He picked up some seasoned wood from Home Depot while out this morning, which made a huge difference. Neither of us are good at starting fires let alone keeping them going, so the fact that it is still going is huge. I love the smell and constant warmth. I don't think we will need to turn on the heat all winter.

I've got to go beat J in air hockey now. The basement is cold.

Mother Nature gives David the day off

Mother Nature decided David should have a day of rest. We lounged around this morning. He napped as I organized my Christmas cards. I wrote out the majority of them last month. I only had a few left and to buy stamps before they could go out. While David was sleeping I ran to the post office for stamps. There was a nice elderly woman in line in front of me who I struck up a conversation with to pass the time. The young man in front of her was on his cell phone. His non-verbal communication suggested we were disturbing his oh-so-important phone call. [insert sarcastic expression and eye roll here]. His behavior did not sway me. I continued talking about the weather with a smile. After the chit-chat I noticed the new Christmas stamps on the wall. They were not what I was hoping for, so instead I bought four sheets of Yoda stamps. I hope next year they have Chewbaca. Even better would be furry Chewbaca stamps. If only they would. Anyway, all of my Christmas cards are finally out.

When I returned, David and I headed out to lunch and then to the mall in search of a jewelry box. We tried Macy's first only to find that they did not receive a single one this season. The clerk said they usually do because it is a hot item. Penneys had several, tall and small. It was difficult to chose one. Lucky for David, who has no patience for shopping at all, I am a super speedy shopper. I picked out my favorite in less than 15 minutes. That time includes being misdirected by the sales clerk at the perfume counter.

Once we were home and settled in I remembered Dev had a concert tonight and his dress clothes were dirty from the field trip on Tuesday. The shirt ended up fitting him just fine and so did not need my super shrinking powers after all. He looked so cute all dressed up. I cannot believe how big he is. We left for the concert at 1800. The holiday concert included the 7/8 grade choir and band. David's mom could not attend because of work, but my mom and step dad were able to be there which made Devin happy. His godparents were there too. Devin had two solos. He did very well on the first and had some difficulty on the second. Afterward, he admitted that he should have practiced more. I trust he will next time. The concert only took 45 minutes. According to my son, I was the ONLY parent moving to the music. I told him to get used to a life time of me embarrassing him. On the way home
boh boys agreed I am strange. I'm okay with that.

The house is quiet with the exception of David's snoring. Everyone is asleep. My arm was asleep too before I freed it from David's grasp. I am to wired from the Pepsi to follow suit.

My dictionary is defunct

I received my encyclopedic dictionary as a present from my high school boyfriend for my 18th birthday. I am now 35. The binding screams "You are killing me!!!" from the moment the maroon cover varies in any direction. Loose and darkened, the pages are intact. The presidential section is in mint condition. I was unaware of it's academic inadequacy until my youngest son needed a dictionary to complete his spelling assignment. At first, the assignment flowed effortlessly. Then we came to the word railroad. No other forms were listed. Jason is a smart cookie and immediately rattled off other forms such as railroaded, railroading, etc... I decided to check dictionary.com to make sure they were acceptable words and not considered slang. Not that it matters really given the fact that all words originate somewhere. A dictionary is a tool used to teach us commonly used words and meanings. Sadly, even ain't is now in the dictionary. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. After all, what two words form the contraction ain't? The only acceptable way to list the word is aint without the apostrophe. I still do not like it, but at least it is grammatically correct. That is enough ranting I suppose, for now. We used both the old Webster dictionary and dictionary.com for the remaining words.

I will be visiting Barnes and Noble this weekend.
Pediculosis. Yes, that is what a student nurse checks for when visiting local schools, that and scoliosis. It has been my experience that people are not educated in either subject. Pediculosis is an infestation of the parasite head lice. The head lice choose only human hosts, so pets are not a factor. They do not fly or jump, they crawl. The brown sesame sized pests are hard to see as they scurry away at the first glimpse of light. What is most commonly found are the nits (eggs). From what I have seen, they look like a grain of salt cemented on the hair close to the shaft. Nits are not to be confused with dandruff which is easily moved by the fingers. If a louse or egg is found, shampoo must be applied and hair carefully combed through to get rid of the eggs and lice. Nix works the best and protects for 14 days after. All bedding must be washed in the hottest water available. Vacuuming is also important (stairs, bedrooms, living and family rooms, etc...). Stuffed animals are to be sealed in bags for two weeks because eggs can hatch up to two weeks after laid. Once an egg hatches, the nymph must find a human host to feed from within 24 hours to survive. The likelihood of this happening is slim. Nymphs cannot be seen by the naked eye. After checking each person's head, wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds and dry completely. If soap and water is not available you may use hand sanitizer that is 60-70 percent alcohol. Soap and water is recommended if active lice is found however.

The biggest risks are sharing brushes, pillows, hair clips or accessories, hats, hugs, bedding, and stuffed animals. It is not recommended to treat other family members with the shampoos, unless lice or nits are present, for several reasons. A few off the top of my head are: the shampoo is a pesticide that can harm you, using the shampoo to prevent infection increases the resistance of lice to the treatment, simple precautions are effective if thorough, and shampoos can be expensive.

Now let's talk about scoliosis.

Scoliosis is idiopathic. Often found in middle school children, it appears that the spinal curvature occurs during the adolescent "growth spirt". The S or C shaped curve can be subtle and more common in girls. Observed by uneven clavicals, scapulae, or hips. Distance between arms and truck as well as uneven flanks are also significant. Mild forms are to be watched closely and usually do not need treatment. Moderated and severe cases are treated with braces and in extreme cases surgery.

Random thoughts

1. The cap to my son's bubbles fits my Clorox bleach bottle. The original cap rolled under the gigantic shelving we have downstairs and I can't get it.

week in review

It occurred to me what day it was just now as I was about to blog about my week. Seventeen years ago tonight I was at a college party. David was about to be sent to Iraq. We were not together but he had told me that November that he still loved me. I was very confused and scared. The night before he was to be sent, I tempted fate and drank an inordinate amount of wine. I just didn't want to think about it. I am not a drinker...not then, not now. The last thing I remember was sitting with my best friend on a couch and then waking up in the morning to friends at the foot of the bed waiting for me to wake up. Hands down the most embarrassing moment of my life. I thank the stars and my best friend for keeping me safe. My life could have been changed forever in the worst possible way. I think of this more often in recent years than before because my son is now a teenager. I know that he is going to make mistakes and I can only hope he surrounds himself with people who will have his back like I did.

Now on with the present....

This week saw the end of Community Nursing. It is a relief to be done. I stuggled academically with this one with the exception of getting an A on the final. I received a Caritas award (nursing award commending professionalism, altruism, competency, and integrity). I was so proud I went to frame the award only to find that there was a back to it. My instructor had written at length about what I had done to earn the award. I was very touched. My instructor is an amazing lady so it meant a great deal to me. Even better is that she offered to write me a letter of recommendation when it is time to find a job. Life is pretty darn good I'd say.

Thursday (last clinical day) was quick and easy. We went to lunch afterwards to celebrate. After two hours we were full of food, out of conversation, and ready to part ways.

Friday was my day of rest. I treated myself to a trip to Beachwood Mall. There I excitedly bounced from makeup counter to makeup counter. I purchased my beloved Nars Orgasm blush in a multiple instead of powder. The multiples can be used for eyeshadow, lipstick, and blush. It is beautiful. I visited the MAC counter and found two holiday sets I liked, coral and plum. They came in cute little change purse like bags. Very pretty. I also hit the Crabtree & Evelyn store and L'Occitane. L'Occitane stopped selling my favorite scent, Rose and Neroli oil so I was looking for a replacement. C&E has a nice rosewater perfume that I am considering and L'O has an orange perfume and a rose perfume that I could combine but I have not been able to decide. While roaming through the mall a tall foreign gentleman asked for a moment of my time. I must have been weak from lack of Pepsi because I went along with his pitch. He buffed one nail and I explained that hand care is wasted on me. I am too lazy to care about them or my poor neglected cuticles. I made the mistake of saying that my hands are dry which led to him rubbing a dead sea salt mixture onto them. "Scrub!Scrub!", he commanded. "See how much better your hands feel." I explained I buy sea salt in bulk for my husband's psoriasis as wells as sea salt soap, which is wonderful by the way (iHerb.com). His beautiful face looked so sad. I however do not buy things I do not want or need unless I am in Target.

Today David and I headed out to Madison to buy an insert for the fireplace. We have lived here for four years and have never used our fireplace because we were afraid of a fire. It sounds stange I know. We first entered Nichols Fireplace and Stove Center where we were completely ignored. We then went a few doors down to Woodburner's Hearth and Home. We were greeted immediately and given all the information we needed. We needed to check the angle of the fireplace which means we had to go home for that. The salesman walked David through the measuring over the phone to make sure it was correct. We then headed back to order and pay. While David was doing that I had a nice conversation with the mom (Owner). She moved around a lot like me as a kid and lived in my home town briefly, even attended my old church. She offered me some of her homemade fudge which instantly made her my new best friend. The family is clearly adept and knowledgeable. I was impressed. That is not the sugar talking, really.

Late afternoon, I took Dev to the mall for dress clothes and shoes for his holiday concert and a field trip downtown to see a play. Found pants and shoes at a reasonable price at JC Penneys. The dress shirt may be a little big, but I am known for my uncanny ability to shrink any fabric so it should fit fine when I am done. On the way to the shoe department I came across the most adorable novelty socks. I bought two pair, one with piggy tassles and one with monkey tassles, for my nieces. In addition to dress shoes, Dev needed new tennis shoes eventhough his old ones are less than 6 months old. Sigh...Mall didn't have the Nike Air I wanted so off to Kohls we went. I had just bought David a pair there last week so I was sure they still had them. Sure enough they did. Bought Dev the exact same pair in almost the exact same size. I couldn't believe it. While we were there I found a lovely mosaic candle for Jason's teacher, cards (Christmas/Birthday), and a jelly bean machine for Jason. Dev hasn't given me ideas for his stocking. I told him if he doesn't soon I will fill it with fresh broccoli, potatoes, toilet paper, and coal. This did not inspire him in the least to produce a list. He just commented on how off I truly am. His therapist can thank me for the business in years to come.

Tonight we are watching the Heisman ceremony. Not the same without Brady Quinn.

I was cleaning yesterday before school when I saw a scratch on my end table. A nice deep scratch. I looked around to see what I had on there that could have done it. I have way too much on that darn thing. When I finally removed my pens, hi-liter, tissues, papers, cashews, clock, glasses, remote, and such, I found a gray claw. One of my cats must have tried to jump up on the table just as the nail was givingway. I belief so because there was no blood. Clarabelle spent the rest of day vomiting in every downstairs room. I love my cats.

After cleaning, I headed off to school for my final in Community Nursing. For two days had been repeating to myself, "You are intelligent. You are prepared. You will pass this test." I did just that. I used to think self talk was silly, but I can tell you there are moments when no one else in the world can make you believe those words more than yourself. I met with my instructor for med surg next semester. She wrote a book on Peace Management. I like the idea of calling it peace management rather than stress management. I have a low stress threshold which is responsible for me missing med surg at the beginning of the semester. I have yet to learn when I am in over my head or to ask for help before I sink into a pool apathy that leads to depression. After all, depression is anger turned inward. Well, at least that is what Tony Soprano's shrink says. I had the opportunity to be team leader at one of our community sites this five weeks and it has taught me to deligate. The key is not feeling inadequent because you need help. In the clinical setting this is sometimes easier than at home. Tomorrow clinicals in Cleveland. I get to do a puppet show with my group. I had to write it myself. It's nothing complicated, just a review of the book a member my group will read to them. Jason helped me rehearse last night. He was so cute behind the chair with his alligator puppet and cartoon voice. Tomorrow I hope to do half as well.

A day well spent

We have hosted Thanksgiving every year since we moved into this house. Last night, we cooked two turkey breasts and the stuffing. Today all we had to do is reheat them, cook the veggies in the those new Ziplock steam bags, cook the rolls, and set up. My brother-in-law arrived just in time with the potatoes and to make the gravy. I was raised to use the juices only but David's side likes it thick and brown. Since I haven't a clue how to make that happen, Keith stepped in where my mother-in-law would normally be. We told everyone to be there at 1pm. We were only off schedule by a few minutes as we were waiting for one more person. The food was so good I had three helpings. I really love turkey. I really love brownies too. I had two. Thankfully, there were plenty of takers so I didn't end up eating more than that. Our youngest niece was absent as she had a bad case of the flu. Our sister-in-law stayed home with her. They were missed. Jason convinced several of us to play airhockey. He beat us all except one game with Danni. David's dad brought family papers for us to see that his father wrote tracing their family tree from the time they came over from England to America in 1629 to the mid-1800's. Very interstering stuff. There is more information that has been accumulated over the years that we have yet to see. The conversations varied as we moved from room to room. Watched part of the ND game rerun hoping to see us in the background. The camera always stopped before panning over to us, darn it. Everyone is gone now. We cleaned as we went so it didn't take long to get everything back to normal. I studied for a test for awhile but now we are watching the USC vs. Arizona game. I am rooting for USC. I like Pete.

A woman without a voice

I have been without my voice since Saturday. It was starting go before the ND vs. Duke game and was completely gone by the end. Today I had to present my NCLEX style question in front of the class and instead of sounding like a competent nursing student I was channelling Peter Brady going through the change. Very frustrating.
Given my voiceless existence, I am unable to attend clinicals tomorrow. Very very frustrating. I will however be able to make up the day. I am sorry to miss because I had just written up a new procedure and schedule for this week that I was anxious to try out. I am group leader so I really wanted to be there. I will spend the day working on my paper and studying for my next quiz to keep me out of trouble, not talking to myself at all.

On a side note, I am also very frustrated with the spell check on this site. It refuses to save my corrections!

Notre Dame pilgrimage revised

We began our long weekend mid morning Friday by loading the car for our trip to South Bend. We waited until then so we would miss traffic. We waved to Brady Quinn as we passed the Avon Lake exit. Jason asked if we could go to his house. We chuckled and told him that would not be appropriate. He insisted that Brady could go to Notre Dame with us. He even offered his seat and said, "I can sit in the middle mom." Although he never quite understood our reasoning, it wasn't long before he became reabsorbed in his Rudy movie on the dvd player. The roads were busy but not backed up at the beginning and shortly became effortless to navigate. I do not know of any car trip we have taken to date that was so easy. We made it there in about 5 1/2 hours. That includes a bathroom break and lunch. After much research, we decided to stay in Michigan City rather than South Bend. It is 40 minutes from the stadium. We learned that that although they are only 40 minutes from South Bend, they are an hour behind. The Holidome here is lovely. The suite is huge and has double doors dividing the living room area where the boys are. The activity area had a game room, hottub, pool, and video games. The pool was interesting. We went down there Friday night and found part of it goes outside. You have to swim under the glass wall to get there. The outdoor section is rather small. I cannot imagine how much it costs to keep the water warm because it was warm inside but not outside. The hot tub was okay. Too many chemicals for me. While we were playing sharks and minoes in the pool we could see them setting up for something. We feared they were going to kick us out for a conference but it turned out to be a welcome table for the entire Duke football team as well as coaches and assorted family. I was too embarrassed to get out of the pool until they were out of sight. David just looked at me like I was completely irrational and said,"They couldn't care less. All they care about is football right now",as he held the towel just out of reach and motioned for me to take it, "Just get out." And so I did.

We went back to the room to shower and then off to dinner. The hotel restaurant is a Damons where Jason could eat for free so that is where we went. We ended up next to several Duke players and coaches. We encountered them in the elevater, common areas, and again this morning at breakfast. They were very nice.

We headed out to South Bend around 10 am. A wonderful toll booth operator directed us to the best route when our mapquest directions proved insufficient. David has yet to fall in love with google maps as I have. The parking area was grassy and only a couple of rows had been filled. As soon as we got out of the car, Jason wanted to throw the football around like the tailgaters. David was anxious to get moving but I couldn't resist. We played for a good 10 minutes before the next row of cars got in our way. From there we gathered our coats and assorted cold weather gear and headed to the road where the shuttle bus was to take us to Notre Dame. Less than a minute wait and off we were. The bus let us off at the library. We followed the crowd to Touchdown Jesus. As we tried to get a good picture Jason stood there wide eyed and a little puzzled. He looked at the mural and said,"Did he play for Notre Dame?" David and I had a good laugh. If that were the case we wouldn't be 2 and 9 would we?! Anyway, David was able to get a nice picture of it. We didn't realize that while the campus is beautiful, it wasn't going to take us long to see everything. We hit the bathroom in the athletic building and the Varsity Shop. Came out of there with a Rudy jacket for J, face decals, a couple hats, postcards, and gameday beads. Devin sulked for awhile when he didn't get something only to be reminded he does not like ND. As a matter of fact, he has openly routed against them more than once this year. I gave him some game day beads and face decals which seemed to cheer him up. Maybe there is hope of converting him yet. I also brought his Ohio State scarf for him to wear. We wandered the campus aimlessly trying to kill time. There were vendors like at a fair selling poporn, candy apples, cotton candy, elephant ears, etc...There also were stands selling merchandise. We bought giant pretzels the size of my head and attempted to eat them without flinging salt everywhere. I was unsuccessful. I am still picking the salt chunks out of my hair. David observed that despite the crowd the campus was remarkable calm and relatively quiet. That is something you could not say about Ohio State I'm sure. The gates opened at 1pm. The stadium has banners and tributes to players everywhere. There also was an abundance of consession stands. Even better was the ladies room had many many stalls. Our seats were upper deck and apparently in the Duke section. We were not intimidated. The two of the men in front of us were from Ohio. The first half of the game was worrisome. It wasn't until the last couple minutes of the second quarter that the game became interesting. The sporatic snow pellets turned into a steady rain as we cheered the Irish to victory. So much so that I am currently without a voice. I've been sick for the last couple of days. That coupled with the rain and screaming made my condition what it is now. I always thought I didn't talk much. I know now that is not true. Even though my voice is more raspy than Kathleen Turner and is not much louder than a whisper, I keep talking. Anyway, the game was a blast. It was a little chilly and damp but bareable. Of course, had they not won I might feel differently. The end of the game was particularly interesting because Charlie put Tommy Z in as quarterback at the end of the fourth quarter. He also put in other seniors who were on the roster who never gotten a chance to go on the field. I love Rudy moments. Jason was commended by an older gentlemen for his talent for seeing penalties even before the ref did. He does have a eye for the game. David surprised us by actively rooting for the Irish. We only took a few pictures and one video clip because it was too difficult to do while trying to watch the game. Getting out of the stadium after the game was effortless which surprised me. It took more time for us to get out after our city fireworks(13,000 residents) than it did today with 80,000 fans. The trip home today seemed much longer than it was mostly because I am not feeling well. The Dayquil is working for all symptoms except my voice. Halls proved ineffective as well. The weather was kind, only a few drops and flakes here and there. David missed the toll road which we thought would set us back but instead got us home faster. Take that mapquest!

This has been a memorable weekend. We are looking forward to coming back next year.

Hail..hail..more hail

Hello winter weather. Technically we are still in Fall but this morning was cold and the hail pelted me and J as we waited at the bus stop for what seemed like an eternity.

Yesterday was no better weather wise. On the way to clinicals, the hail bounced off my windshield. It was my first day as group leader. We were not given much instruction other than what to set up and where. We were being tested, I think, on our ability to adapt and think critically on our own. I believe we did a good job. Our instructor agreed.

Monday was football equipment turn in. I asked them if it was okay to sew the practice pants that were ripped when we got them. They not only said it was okay, but gave me several more that needed mending. I learned to sew in 7th grade home ec. I hope to figure out the best way to keep the pants from ripping again in the same spot. I'm going to consult the gals at Joanne Fabrics to make sure I'm doing it right. While I'm there, I need to gather materials to make my teens and smoking prevention poster for school. I am going to ask Devin for help on this since he is a teen. I am painfully aware that I am not cool. I also know that I am not a kid anymore which means I have no idea how to get my point across to teens in a way that doesn't make them roll their eyes. The other presentation is a puppet show with a board that is already made. My group gets to write a song and read a book. This is my kind of project. I love working with kids almost as much as I love nursing.

A sigh of relief...

I have successfully completed mental health nursing. Monday I begin community nursing for five weeks. I like the length of the rotations. Even though it is a lot of information in a short time, it goes quick.

Halloween was surprisingly slow. The most excitement came from Jason's school. The high school band came down to lead the elementary school parade down the street, around the middle school, and through the library with a police escort. They were thrilled. Not many kids out that night. I was giving away fist fulls of candy and still lots of candy left. The cool thing is that our neighbors thought like we did and gave out mostly chocolate. Gone are the days of tootsie rolls or Bit-o-Honeys. However, there was one surprise in Devin's bag that I would never have guessed. One neighbor handed out hard boiled eggs with his last name on them. I have to wonder how many made their way back to his yard. Jason was the black suited Spiderman and Devin was Michael Myers. Ironically my very first real date was in the 9th grade and his name was Michael Myers. Like creepy. The skeleton lights and lite-brite jack-o-lanters were a big hit. Many a toddler and adult alike had to stop and look at them.
Good to know my impulse buying is starting to pay off.

This morning, I broke out the treadmill. I finally used the dvd player on my laptop to watch Roll Bounce while I was walking to make it more tolerable. Couldn't hear the movie to well, but it was better than listening to music. I felt a burst of energy afterward which motivated me to straightened out my bookshelf. Next time I'll work on my desk.

Early afternoon left me anxious. I decided to head out to Seasonal to buy sweatshirts and hats. I ended up with two baseball caps and one sweatshirt. I am still waiting for the smaller sizes to come in for J. Then I went to Arrowhead to buy an acoustic guitar Devin wants for Christmas. I ended up buying a nicer one than we orginally looked at because there was a special that included the case. He is going to love it. I gave both boys the talk about not expecting as many presents under the tree since the items they are asking for get more expense as they get older. They seemed to understand, but we will see how they do on Christmas day.

I have a nagging feeling I'm forgetting something today. Hopefully someone or something will remind me before it is too late.

Tomorrow night I'm off to my sister's for a jewelry party. I am looking forward to it.

The wind...Lately it has been fierce. Last night it blew over the basketball hoop and dented the heck out of the little van. It whistled and blew through our bundled bodies at Jason's football game. Jason lost his last game. The other team had not won a game so it was a big day for them where as Jason's team had already won 3. Jason was happy for his friend who was on that team.

I am gearing up for Halloween. I put the Jack-O-Lantern lights last night. Sadly they fell already. I put on the table cloth and need to look for my funky place mats with the moving eyeballs. Candy is still there minus two Reeses peanut butter cups. ;) I keep forgetting to carve the pumpkins. I bought these Lite-Brite type bulbs to make designs. Yep, Target can sell me just about anything.

I wrote out most of my Christmas cards already. I am seriously procrastinating. Final exam is Wednesday. I've studied some, but need to focus better.

Last lecture in the am tomorrow then off to Hospice.

Week in Review

Sunday

J lost his playoff game. Sad but true. They are now in third place regardless of how they do tomorrow. He has been a good sport. I am proud of him for doing his best.

Monday

Started with J being sent home. There have been 8 people in his class with lice. The school nurse aid found what she thought were two nits on his nape but no actual lice and so he was sent home. I inspected his head and the rest of us and found nothing. We did the whole shampoo thing, vacuumed every in inch of the house, washed clothing and bedding, and bagged up all stuffed animals just in case. We also shaved both boys heads. We have never had a scare like this before which is pretty good considering our oldest is in 8th grade. Personally, I think they were wrong, but better safe than sorry.

Took exam II at school. Felt atomic bomb bad. Emailed teacher for grade.

Tuesday

Left me afraid of many things that because of HIPPA I cannot discuss. Still no response from teacher.

Wednesday

Fellow student got her grade and stated teacher reports all grades bad, the highest being an 82% ( a C in nursing school). Still no word on my test.

Thursday

Last clinical day at the hospital. Very busy day. Brought my amazing twinkie cake to share with the group. Teacher handed each of us a piece of paper with a classmate's name on it. We were instructed to write something positive about that person then pass it to the right. We were given our pro list and told to put it on the refrigerator. We spend most of our time in the nursing program identifying areas that need improvement and little time thinking about our strengths. We all admitted we were uncomfortable reading the list. Why are we unable to take pride in our strengths? Mine is on the refrigerator. I have forced myself to read it a few times.

Teacher emailed grade, 80%. Still one exam to go.

Friday

Told Dev he was going to miss the bus. He refused to listen stating he knew exactly when the bus would be there. I told him it could come early but he still did not listen. Moments after he left I heard a noise in the garage. When I openned the door, I saw Dev lowering his bike because he missed the bus.

Shopping at Target. Bought 5 enormous bags and 3 small ones of Halloween candy, clock for living room, and organizers.

Tore apart the upstairs closet. Put organizer to use to keep things in place in the closet, bathroom, and in Dev's room. Still need more but it's a start.

Retouched hair color the lovely shade of intense auburn. Happy hair didn't fall out. Really not fond of the Brittney/Sinead look.

Got a call from David that his truck broke down. Our friends who do work on our boat and cars picked him up, brought him home, and fixed his van that day. They are awesome. We are very lucky. I want to say it was the drive shaft. It was fortunate he broke down because it was about to fall off.

Saturday

The last football practice. Study for final exam. No Irish football.

I blame the throw back jerseys damn it!

Notre Dame lost big today. I always cringe when I see them run out onto the field in the green jerseys, but today I thought maybe it would be different since they were in green throw back jerseys ($50.00 at the Official Notre Dame athletic store).

Yep, I had a little twinkle of hope. Had being the operative word.

That being said, I am still a die hard Notre Dame fan. It takes time to build greatness back up.

Go Irish!

Welcome back my big beautiful flat friend. Welcome back.

Adventures in nursing school....process recording, presentation, patient care plan and paper, quiz, lecture, and clinical....lots of work. Next week, test on Monday and process record on therapeutic communitcation paper due Thursday.

It helps that football is almost over for Jason. His last practice is next Saturday and game that Sunday. Devin finished up on Monday.

Last Sunday the tube on the big tv blew. Turns out my affection for the darn thing wore it out. We had just hooked up the Direct TV the day before. David was not happy with me. Had to bring down the bedrm tv until the bulb came in the mail. It only took 4 days for it to get here. In a matter of minutes all was right with the world. Welcome back my dear electronic friend. Welcome back.

My big beautiful friend kept me company as I worked on med cards all day long.

Midget League Wolverines beat Irish!!!!

Today the #1 ranked Irish were shut out by the Wolervines. It was the best game I have seen them play. They dominated the entire game. I clapped so hard I bruised my left hand. I tend to get excited watching football especially when my boys are playing. :)

Final score 13-0. The last time we played them we lost 24-0.

Go Wolverines!!!!

Notre Dame football only $129.00 + tax!

We settled in to watch the Notre Dame game only to find it is not on. Technically it is on PPV for $129.00 + tax. Ummm...I consider myself a die hard Notre Dame fan but if I'm going to spend money to see Notre Dame play it is going to be in person. This unfortunate programing has me tuning in to watch Ohio State play Purdue instead. I have a deal with Devin that I root for OSU when they are not playing ND. I find this difficult to do. I used to be a fan back in college because my boyfriend at the time went there. I became an Irish fan with my husband shortly after we were married. I find that I have no legitimate reason to dislike Ohio State and yet I do. Maybe my subconsious has the old boyfriend linked with the team. See my stint in Mental Health nursing already has me analyzing my behavior not just my patients'.

School is going well. Psych nursing is different than med surg in that it is primarily about therapeutic communication. We learned therapeutic communication skills back in first semester and have continued to practice them each clinical rotation, but never to this extent. My biggest fear is saying the worng thing. The textbook states this is a common fear of nursing students which believe it or not helps. Only four more weeks of this rotation.

I downloaded virtual Stitch again to my computer. I have downloaded different versions over the years and deleted them when I get bored with the program. This program has experiments 221 and 625 as well. The best thing about virtual Stitch is he doesn't die if I forget to play with him like the monkey on my pda.

Tomorrow Jason's team plays the midget league Irish who
(ironically) are undefeated. I have to work the concession stand after the game. I have a touch of the flu and hope to be feeling better by then.

Back to school

I went back to school this morning. I missed it. The lecture moved along at a tolerable pace. Monday is the short lecture day this five weeks. After class today we went to the local Hospice for a couple of hours. We will spend a day or two there during this rotation. I am not sure how I will do with it. I teared up a few times while there and that is without working with patients. Clinical orientation is tomorrow. It takes 41 minuts to get there. I used Google Maps to get directions. I feel confident that I will make it there without incident. Two great things about this rotation are that I can wear business casual clothes rather than the uniform and I'll be home before the kids.

I have two chapters to read tonight for tomorrow. It is good to be back.

One Schrute buck

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Yeah! New shows!!!

Last night I was really missing the Gilmore Girls. It used to be on at 8pm and now there is nothing on in that time slot that interests me. Perhaps I should buy the series on DVD to create my own programing schedule.

The CW premiered Reaper at 9pm. Bret Harrison plays Sam, a guy who's parents sold his soul to the devil before he was born. I really love this show. It is original. Ray Wise is very entertaining as "The Devil". Granted, he is no Elizabeth Hurley (Bedazzled) guys ; no skimpy outfits or sexual overtones. Well, at least not yet anyway. The supporting cast meshes well with the lead character. I cannot wait to see what happens next week.

From 10-11pm we watched Cane on CBS. I have liked Jimmy Smits since his time on L.A. Law. There is just something about him. He is the Heather Locklear of television. You have rating problems? Bring in Jimmy. While there was no saving the West Wing, he did wonders for NYPD Blue. Somewhere David Caruso just felt a sharp pain in his neck. Yes Mr. Caruso, he is infinitely better than you could ever hope to be. The show is a cross between The Godfather and the 2003 miniseries Kingpin.

I hope it does well. I usually watch reruns of the George Lopez show or Scrubs at that time. I will have to make an effort to watch this again.

I am so excited that my favorite show, The Office, is premiering this week! I cannot wait to see Jim and Pam together.

Back to practice

Jason had his fifteen minutes of fame yesterday. Everyone was surprised to see him up and around. He woke up for school without any pain or outward sign of injury. We are so grateful. He was very hyper. He couldn't wait to get to practice. The ER doc said he could go back as long as he wasn't in pain and so we went. Jason insisted we leave early. We even beat the coaches to the field. Lots to talk about. Jason tackled as hard as ever. We were not sure if he would be afraid of getting hurt. I am glad to carry the burden of fear and apprehension. That comes with the territory.

All of the parents and coaches were so supportive and wonderful. I found out that one of his football coaches from last season called in to see how he was doing. Devin's middle school football coach somehow knew about it and asked also.

Coach Vinny (Devin's midget league coach) came over to talk to me while J was practicing to get the details. He was unhappy with how the injury was handled on the field and said he was going to say something at the next meeting. The ambulance was not called right away and the field was not cleared. He also insisted, god forbid there is a next time, that I go on the field. I think David will be okay with it as long as I keep my composure.

I forgot to mention in the last blog that while we were at the hospital, his team won! Their first win of the season. In the post game hundle they dedicated the game to Spaz. Very cool.

Go Wolverines!!!!

Life

Watched the Life pilot with Damian Lewis tonight. It looks good. The first episode has Michael Cudlitz who played Bull in Band of Brothers as the inmate father who's young son is murdered trying to get information for his release. Damian Lewis plays Charlie Crews, a cop who spent 12 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit and now back on the force with a unique take on life and a score to settle. Humor is subtle and story not new but characters make it interesting.

I will be watching it again.

Did someone call the ambulance?!!!!

Today Jason got his first ride in an ambulance. During the fourth quarter Jason went down after trying to tackle the ball carrier. His body twisted and back hit the ground. He didn't get up. He didn't move. One coach goes on the field...then another...then another...then the doctor...then another coach...then David. Me, I have been told I am not to go on the field by my husband because I tend to go overract, so I sat for some time on the sideline waiting for a thumbs up. Friends gathered at my side as I waited for what seemed like an eternity. One of the fathers went over to find out what was happening. Still nothing. Then I saw one of them gesture to call the ambulance. Finally our friend Scott gave the thumbs up I had been waiting for but also added David said to get our things together. I then went onto the field. There was some confusion and the ambulance was not called so our coach called them himself. Because it was his back they made him stay still. He was able to move all extremities, pupils were equal/reactive, and was A&O x 3. They put him on the board and off to the hospital slowly we went. Hillcrest has a peds er where we saw lots of players from all over. I guess midget league keeps them super busy on Sundays. The paramedics were wonderful. Found out the one paramedic's son and father share Jason's birthday. His wife works at Hillcrest also. The nurse was very sweet and spoke to Jason in a soft voice. The doctor was friendly and quick. No x-rays were needed, only Motrin. As long as his is up to it he can go back to football tomorrow. I wish he would sit out tomorrows practice but David feels he should play. We both agree that if he is in any pain tomorrow he should go but not participate.

When we got home our neighbor called out about Jason. I know we live in a small town but that is just freaky. It had only been 30 minutes since he was taken off the field. She had run into one of the mothers from the opposing team at the grocery store. As we enter the house the phone was ringing. It was his coach calling to see how Jason was. Here he had gone to the er but we had already left.

I made a few phone calls and then we went to the buffet for dinner. I was both hungry and nausiated. It was weird. I forced myself to eat.

Jason is fine right now on the Motrin. We will see how he is when it wears off.

Chuck

Last night I was feeling too sleepy from the Benadryl to focus on a movie so David and I watched the pilot episode of Chuck via On Demand. I think it was pretty good. It has a good mixture of comedy and action. I hope to see more comedy than action in the future. The characters are likable and interesting. The plot has potential.

There were other pilots and sneak previews of shows on On Demand to watch for shows like The Office and Life with Damian Lewis who I quickly became fond of watching the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. I am looking forward to checking them out later.

It's a small world after all....

Today Jason went over a the house of a new friend from his class. When I dropped him off, I talked to the parents for a while and found out the husband works with a guy I went to school with and the wife grew up with several people I went to school with as well as her sister dated a guy David graduated with. It was a nice chat. When I came to pick Jason up, I decided to let him play a bit longer and in doing so began what would be a two hour conversation that would end with us finding another connection. My sister has been her sister's babysitter for quite some time. Years as a matter of fact. The conversation progressed from her mother's surgery to stress caused by the daughter and granddaughter being diagnosed with cancer the same day that year. Ding!Ding! My sister Laura told me about the family she babysits for with both the mother and child having cancer. I knew this could not be a coincidence. She told me how wonderful my sister is and how much her sister adores her.

Both of my sisters are participating in The Light the Night walk at the end of this month to raise money for cancer research in honor of the family.

I couldn't be more proud.

Who knew?

Until this past weekend I though they only performed Civil War reenactments in PA. Devin was invited to go Saturday to a WWII reenactment there. Pretty cool. He brought home a real helmet as a souvenir. While he was away we had the misfortune of watching Notre Dame get pounded by Michigan. Ironically, Jason's Wolverines played the midget league Irish the following day. Sad to say the Irish were a day late in victory. Jason was not upset though. He was made team captian for the coin toss. He started the game as a linemen, but was quickly moved to safety after the other team scored. His name was called so many times by the announcer for his tackles there is no question in anyone's mind who number 41 is. This is good because he wasn't happy playing safety last game. I think now that he has the hang of it he will be fine. Devin was put in the last quarter of the middle school game. They beat Hawken I think 38-0. Three more games to go. I hope they will let him play more next game. He tries so hard and never misses a practice.

Yesterday, David and I took a ride with our old dock neighbors on the their boat to HTP for lunch. There I had the best BLT I have ever had. We ate outside on the deck. The view of the lake was beautiful. The only problem with being out there was the bees, too many to count and very aggressive, and the noise from the rack storage.

Today I am working on my study guides for mental health nursing. That rotation begins October 1.

Su Doku for Dummies

Some time ago, Bill introduced Devin to Su Doku. For those of you who don't know, Bill is my step-dad. Well, he was for a long time before he and my mother divorced a few years back. Anyway, his level of intelligence surpasses my own and I suspect Devin's does as well. Eventhough they do not share the same genes they are very much alike. Devin's love for Ohio State, comic books, baseball cards, monster movies (especially Godzilla), black and white television shows (The Munsters and Andy Griffith), chess, model cars, and now Su Doku comes from him.

The name Su Doku sounds more like a character in a Star Wars movie than the numbers game that is making me crazy. Devin has tried to explain it to me and I bought the book Su Doku for Dummies to supplement his teaching. I am used to word searches. I am a master word searcher. This numbers game takes much more brain power than I am used to exerting in a recreational activity. I have been looking for something to challenge my brain and thus improve it's function. Too soon to say if it is working.

Looking for a garlic butter salt saturated stromboli

My friend from college told me that this place called the Fox's Pizza Den has a good Stromboli. Sadly none are close to me. Must try it when we come down to visit. :)

Second string on the field

After two games on the bench, Devin finally played yesterday. Once the blue devils had a significant lead over the cardinals, the coach put in the second string players. Devin tried his best. He accidentally grabbed a face mask, but that was his only penalty. He was so excited and proud to be out there. He played the entire second half! The final score was 54-0 I believe. I actually felt bad for the other team. They tried so hard but fumbled so many times it was impossible to recover. By the end, I was routing for them score. I know that sounds bad, but I hate to see any team get shut out.

I hope the coaches continue to play the second string regardless of the score.

Stromboli !!!!!!!!

I was super excited last night when I saw the Donatos commercial for their new stromboli! I ordered one today as soon as they openned. It is real good. Not as good as the Strombolis in Ada, Ohio back in my ONU days, but darn good. The main difference being there is no garlic butter and salt on the outside. That was what makes a superior stromboli. I will have to make my own rub for the next one and hope it comes close.

"girl" chores

Last night, my husband took issue with the chores our son is doing. He feels his chores are "girl" chores. I wasn't aware there was a distinction. There are things that need to be done and everyone in the family pitches in. That was my understanding of how it works. He defined "boy" chores as cleaning the garage, cutting grass, shoveling snow, taking out trash, and assorted yard work. The only acceptable indoor "girl" chores apparrently are cleaning your room and putting away your clothes. I am supposed to know exactly what is to be done outside as well as inside, and assign his chores accordingly. I have no concept of what is to be done outside or how often it is to be done, which makes it difficult for me to do what I must.

What it really boils down to is that the outdoor chores help him and the indoor chores help me. And he has not gotten the help he needs without asking.

Get thee to Target

I have been thinking about putting away summer clothes and such which means I would have to buy containers. Last night, David voiced his discontent with my management of the house, which is probably what fueled or inspired my trip to Target this morning.

I bought two organizing drawer sets on wheels. The small one is for Dev. His dresser is falling apart and this will due until I can buy a new one. I brought down his old one to go out with the trash. Chances are, it will be gone before the truck comes. Lots of garage pickers out here eventhough it is against the city ordinance. The larger organizer went in our room. David did not have enough room in the dresser for both his work and casual clothes. Now he has the entire dresser. I cleaned out my drawers and found many things to get rid of. What remains fits perfectly in the organizer. Our room really isn't big enough for a bedroom set.

I also picked up hangers (shirts, pants, and belts), 18 gal. containers, and assorted junk from the dollar bins.

I was happy to get the containers on sale for $4.99 a piece. Two are already filled. I am currently taking a break. All six should be full by tonight.

Dev has a game after school. He said they are going to play the second string players. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they do. He would be over the moon.

I am bad luck for the teams I love.

It was a bad weekend for football. Well, it least for the teams I like. The Wolervines, both Michigan and midget league,Notre Dame, and the Browns lost. Should be interesting to see Michigan and ND play next week. It is my understanding that this is the first time in their histories at 0-2.

Jason lost 6-8. He was a good sport.

As for the Browns, I have two words...BRADY QUINN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did my part. I wore my orange Quinn jersey, but it only helps if he is in the game.

Looking for the big one

This morning David and I went to National Liquidators to see some boats we saw on their website. When we got there David spoke to the woman in the office and found that we needed to sign in. Siging in gave us permission to look at the boats on our own. We were able to inspect them inside and out. Our favorite was a 37' Sea Ray. We started out looking for a 34 footer but found the 37 had everything we wanted.

It's going to be a while before we get one, but it was fun to look.

Our Week in Review

Saturday Jason had practice and a birthday party. He asked me to stay and I was reluctant to do so until the bowling alley put on the Notre Dame game for me. Jason seemed to have trouble bowling while I watched but excelled when I was a few yards away. That made it easy to watch the game and him. I appear to be bad luck for both Jason and the Irish unfortunately. I was not discouraged by the game. The post-Brady Quinn Notre Dame era is going to take time to get used to yes, but I see talent just waiting to become great. A little experience and time is all that they need.

Sunday, we took the boat to see the air show. The planes came really close. Very cool. It wasn't long before Jason needed to use the lav. After going below deck he became sea sick and we decided to head back to the dock. We went out for a nice dinner and then took J to play putt-putt. We rarely get an opportunity to spend time with just Jason so we wanted to make it special. After I earned third place, we went back to the dock where David and J took the jet ski out while I slept off the Bonine (sea sick med) I took hours earlier for the ride out to Cleveland.

It was dark by the time we returned home.

This week was dominated by football. Devin's team lost again. He has yet to play. Both times, the other team played all their players whereas his coach leaves 7 on the bench every game. Jason has his first game on Sunday. They will no doubt give Browns updates inbetween plays.

Here's hoping both Jason's Wolverines and Brady's Browns play like champions.

Jason's scrimmage

Json had a scrimmage on Thursday. He,usually a linemen, was a running back and linebacker. I was a little nervous about the running back position because he is so small. He did well but on the first carry one of the kids brought him down by the face mask. He also earned bloody knuckles as linebacker. The other team seemed to listen better than ours but they all had fun and learned something. Should be interesting to see how they do next week when the season starts.

They had practice this morning. What is great about this year is that the kids are showing up to the practices. Last year we averaged 11 kids whereas this year I think we have everyone. Makes a world of differnce.

Now we are anxiously awaiting the return of Notre Dame football. GO IRISH!

****Hopefully the Wolverines have made a come back since I last checked. ************

Visiting friends

Yesterday we drove Devin out to his friend's house in Ashtabula County. His friend moved out of Mentor around the same time we did. They went Northeast and we went a Southwest. The boys have been friends since kindergarten and we try to get them together at least once a year. Last year, Lyle was out here and this year Devin went to his house. They have a beautiful piece of land with a channel in the backyard and side lot that is community property perfect for sled riding. It is an hour ride but took us a bit longer as we hit Taco Bell on the way. Beef hard shell taoo supreme! Good stuff. Anyway, we arrived shortly before the sun went down. They had set up the tent for the boys and built a fire, but we seemed to enjoy it more than they did. They have two boys just like us and then the neighbor boy was over, so they were running all over the place. It wasn't long before they went inside to play video games. Lyle's parents are terrific. Very down to earth and easy to talk to. It is a shame we don't get to see them that often. Same with my friend from college and his family. They live quite even further away and we have yet to see them. I am hoping to change that this year.

Lyle's mom is bringing Dev back tomorrow morning. Once he is home I think we are going to take the boat out to watch the air show.

Thank you :)

I would like to thank my college friend for helping me learn how to link on blogspot. Oh and for teaching me how to throw a spiral.

Football, football, and more football

Tis the season for football. Devin has had practice every day and Jason just started this week. Devin's scrimage was cancelled on Wednesday. This week he has his first real game on the 29th. The middle school team got free tickets to go to the hs game on Friday. We let him go with his friends. Surprisingly the hs team won. Who knew it was possible?! I feel for the Geneva team as we are not known for winning. Glad our guys have a win. Maybe that momentum will carry over to the Perry game this week. One can hope. Meanwhile, my hs team was crushed. Never really followed Mentor football. As much as I love football I just never followed my own schools team. It makes no sense I know.

Jason plays for the Wolverines. Yes, this makes my friend Eric happy because cheering for the Wolverines in any way, even in midget league, is the way it should be. I helped J memorize the holes for practice today. Games don't start for a couple weeks so he has time.

We watched the Browns play last night. Really happy to see Brady Quinn do so well. Not that there was any doubt. His first pass was to Charles Ali. We met Charles at the Rookie Meet and Greet. He actually took the time to look at the book Jason wrote and illustrated. Glad to see he did well also.

Kris's baby shower

Last Sunday was the baby shower for my cousin Kris so we left the boat early that morning. The shower was at 2pm which gave me plenty of time to relax. Unfortunately the rain that began the night before had not subsided, it instead increased in intensity. Many guest decided to pass on the party. Only one tent outside covered well which kept the majority of us inside. I ventured out to eat and then later on to play cards (Phase 10). I watched them play for a bit to learn and didn't get to play until Kris's son Cameron got bored and gave me his spot. My family is super competitive but go easy on me because I am not. It could be because they are being nice or that it just isn't fun to bust the chops of someone who doesn't care. I really enjoyed it. Kris received just about everything. She has two boys already but gave away everything just before she found out she was pregnant again. Isn't that the way it goes?! She was scheduled to have a c-section Friday. She had a baby girl Mylee.

After it was over, I stayed to help clean up. I didn't get home until 8 or 9pm. This is the most I have seen my dad's side of the family in a while. I have seen them 3 times in the last 3 weeks. I think that is a record.

So the aliens are camping here?

While watching Independence Day Jason said, thinking the RVs in the desert heading toward Will Smith were the aliens, "So the aliens are here to go camping?"

Arrrr...I'm a pirate wench!

Last weekend David and I went to a pirate party thrown by our friend Todd. Yep, we dressed accordingly. I was a saucy pirate wench complete with pirate style boots and fishnets. I almost didn't wear the boots because they were high heeled and spikey but the ground was so soft that they sunk in so it was like wearing flats. David wore a pirate shirt, hoop earring, hat, and pants (cut pajama pants from Target). I would say that less than half the people dressed up. Todd made huge turkey legs and everyone brought side dishes. I was grateful for the ladies who brought the pizza, since I am so darn picky that there was nothing else for me to eat. While we were eating, the DJ showed up only to find that he lost the key to his equipment. Jimmy, Todd's brother and friend to all, immediately came to the rescue. It wasn't long before the music was set up and the sun went down. One of the guys went up with our requests to the DJ. After some time I became impatient that they had yet to play my request of Another One Bites The Dust so I went up myself. Sure enough, the next song was mine. I have to wonder if the costume...um...remember I was a saucy wench...had something to do with it. lol There was another party, a luau, two channels over that Todd's sibs talked us into going to in the middle of the pirate party. There they had karaoke. I do not sing outside of my car, but apparently it is a big thing with everyone else. Lots of food and people. I was excited to see cake. Cake and the electric slide made the party for me. They also had a tv the next dock over where they were watching the Browns game. I didn't realized until it was over. By the time we returned to the pirate party the excitement was over. Women and wenches alike flashed for glow in the dark necklaces that I was able to get for just for looking pretty. No show from me. By this time, most people changed into regular clothes, which never accurred to us. A couple of people David graduated with emerged from the crowd proving once again that the world is a very small place. Turns out we were all invited by different people. They were very nice and funny. By 1am we were ready to turn in. We said our goodbyes and headed for the boat. It was so cool that night we had to put on the heat. Worked out better that way as the costumes were heavy.

Overall, it was a lot of fun. We are looking forward to doing it again next year.

Nesting

Today the new mattresses for the boys came. They don't take up as much room as I thought they would. Devin needs a new and much bigger (longer) book shelf. They both still need new dressers, but then so do I. David and I went out to Davitino's tonight. It is the absolute favorite italian restaurant. We finished errands afterward which included trips to Linens and Things, Pat Catans, and Giant Eagle. I have the new sheets in the wash now. David finally put up the world map in the family room. It looks awesome. I bought a frame for my Japanese water lilies and bridge poster, but the size is a bit off so I might use it for something else. I am in serious nesting mode. No I am not pregnant. Bite your tongue. The movie My Super Ex-girlfriend just came on. I have seen bits and pieces before. I will let you know what I think. Watched The Last Kiss last night. I will post on it too.

Brady Quinn signed with the Browns!!!!!!

Giddy is the word I use to describe....

Yes, yesterday was a reeeaaallly good day. I have had a freakish Batman's The Joker smile on my face from the moment I read the news. If my mother is right, my face is going to freeze like that. I'm okay with that.

We will have to work around our football practice schedules in order to see him at training camp. Well worth it my friends. Devin, Jason, and I all have Browns #10 jerseys ready for the occasion. Although I must admit, it might look a little insane if we show up like that. I will probably dress like a mom, not a groupie. Well, we'll see when the day comes.

Jason made Brady a Browns football book to give him at the Hall of Fame rookie meet and greet. It is 31 pages long. He never did have an opportunity to give it to him. Maybe he will have a chance at camp.

Jason has been writing football books since kindergarten. Every book was about Notre Dame beating some college team. He made me print out the list of every college team from espn's site so they could beat them all. This is his first NFL book. The Browns can thank Brady Quinn for that.

Trip to Geneva

Saturday afternoon we took a trip to Geneva State Park Marina with some other boats. The lake was really rough. I wore my wrist bands and took my sea sickness med which mixed with my allergy med to make me very sleepy. I kept nodding off. In doing so, I head butted J 5 times; Not hard, but enough to notice. It took an hour to get there.

It's a nice place. Almost all t docks. Another boat, friends of the people we were with, came in a bit later and we had to raft off of them because it was bigger. Not fond of rafting off. Will not be doing that again. The marina was very quiet. Lots of common green space and beach. They only had one port-a-pot on our side but you could call the main building for a ride to their restrooms. The main building had a little shop and grill. The park has a beautiful lodge not far from the marina. As we walked past, there was a wedding party taking pictures in the gazebo. It was lovely. Not the brides maid dresses, but the bride and groom were anyway. The brides maid dresses were a hideous green. That bride knew what she was doing. lol. The maid of honor however had a pretty white sleeveless dress with green flowers. The trail ran along the shoreline above the rocks. There were enough benches to accommodate every visitor at the lodge. The bridge connecting the lodge to the marina was a covered in names of young lovers. The view from that point was the sun setting over the lake on one side and the moss covered river shaded by the trees on the other. I wish I had brought my camera. Before the sun set, we walked into town. There we played putt-putt. It was a 18 hole course. Somewhere at the middle we noticed that the sound we kept hearing wasn't background noise from the business but the croaking of a small frog hanging out on a rock. It was the strangest sound. Devin gets credit for finding him. After that, we bought tickets for the bumper boats and go carts. J was tall enough to go on the bumper boats by himself but not the go carts. I was worried I would just go in circles. I did every time someone hit me. In between spinning, I did manage to ram into all of my family. For some reason I am the only person who got wet. My shoes, shorts, shirt...no clothing was spared. There was a long line for the go carts which gave me plenty of time to dry off. The go carts were fun. Very very bumpy ride. We had just enough time afterward to play some games in the arcade. I was happy that the prizes for tickets were reasonable. There were lots of items in the 2-25 ticket range. The boys came away with candy, plastic bugs and animals, and the like. The lake chilled the air enough to make us comfortable sleeping on the boat. We left for home early this morning. The lake was calm. I didn't even have to where my wrist bands!

I got an A!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took my final exam for sociology yesterday. I have been anxiously checking Blackboard to see my grade ever since. I was pleasantly surprised to see it up tonight. I got an A on my final and an A in the class! It is a very good day.
We were supposed to be on our way to Canada by now but that was not to be. The boys were disappointed because with us gone they were to spend time with their aunt, uncle, and cousins. We arranged for them to spend a few hours with them today instead. While they were away, David and I went to dinner, stopped at Lowes for a few things, and went to Fine Interiors to buy new mattresses for the boys (or as my friend would say, boy one and boy two.) The mattresses they have now are seven years old and terribly uncomfortable. The ones we bought are pillow topped. Very nice. There was a sale so we bought both sets (full size) for the same price we bought our queen sized pillow top not six months before. Now between the light blocking shades and the mattresses they will never want to wake up.

Earlier today I took Devin in for his sports physical. It was a bit of a wait. After completing the paper work, I went to pay. Devin came out because he was uncomfortable setting in the waiting room alone. We went back and sat down for 45 minutes before he was called. I got up to go with him but reconsidered. He is now 13. I thought it was time for me to let him go on his own. He appreciated it but missed having someone to talk to while waiting for the doctor. I hadn't thought of that. Doctor gave him a clean bill of health. Found that Devin is now officially taller than me.

When we got home, Jason was making tanks and armies out of playdoh. The tanks were quite good whereas the people were little balls, easier to smash I guess. Devin tried out Jason's new helicopter he got from grandpa. Works better inside than out. Outside the wind kept taking it. It is pretty cool.

Right now, we are eating left over ice cream cake from my birthday and watching Cinderella Man. Paul Giamatti. I just love saying that name.

Twinkie cake anyone?

Twinkie cake anyone?

Yesterday was Jason's birthday bash at the dock. This year we made sure the kayaks were inflated before it started so no time was wasted. I bought over 300 water balloons. We put the jet ski in and our friends brought their three seater, which according to David is a 1000 times better than ours because you don't get pounded by the waves. We are both walking funny today. Our ski is more for the younger crowd. They like flying through the air. I am proud to say I got up to 23 mph, but stopped as soon as I realized. I went out with my friend Renee. I was only going 8mph when we fell off. Fortunately, I made David by a step for the ski which made it super easy to get back on. Unlike last year when they almost had to call the coast guard to come and get me after failing to get back on 5 times in a row. Mental note, buy three seater. After falling off and taking on a lot of water, me not the ski, I somehow overcame my fear of falling off again. We were out for a good 45 minutes.

The party was a huge success. The kids spent most of the time on the kayaks and playing with the water balloons. There was also fishing, balloon rockets, Nerf tag, and the bean bag toss (not corn hole). So busy we almost forget to open presents. It was so hot the cupcakes melted. I eventually decided to put them away. It wasn't until I put them away that people wanted to eat them. Evidently this was my error. I did not announce they were fair game. J mostly received money. Other gifts included: nerf tag, scooter, baseketball, squirt gun, football cards, and football card bookholder.

Jason requested I make Twinkie Cake for the family party. I asked him if he was sure as not everyone would like it as much as we do. He insisted. So the night before the party I was making homemade frosting and baking yellow cake. It came out beautifully. It tastes even better than twinkies if you ask me. ;) Speaking of which, there is a small section left from the party I will be eating as soon as I am done here. Ironically, Jason did not want any the day of the party. I will split the remainder with him today. I put little candy football on it because everything around here revolves around football.

The party began to wind down around 9pm. Devin picked up the hundreds of broken balloons in the yard. That earned him the rare "Good Job" from David. Renee, Jared, and Jake stayed the longest. Renee wanted to see the lake at night so we took a cruise. The lake is flat at night. Just outside the channel, the coast guard stopped us. The children were all nervous. They thought they were going to arrest us all. I just laughed. I explained that they were just making sure that every boater is doing what they are supposed to. The only people who need to worry are those who are doing something wrong. I imagine we were a pleasant surprise for them that night. We rarely drink in everyday life and we never drink when boating whereas the majority of boaters are sloshed. I don't envy them. The guys were very polite and funny. They gave us a slip to show we passed inspection and went on to the next boat. It is good to know they are out there.

By the time we got back in we were hungry. Ate some left over pizza and then our company left. David went below deck to set up the beds when he noticed the fumes. He left the restroom window open while cruising. There wasn't enought time to air out the cabin as it was 12:45 am, so we came home.

It was a good day.

The Simpsons movie website

The Simpsons movie is coming out on July 27th. They advertised that you can make an avatar of you as a Simpsons character, but the site is so busy that it is impossible to upload a picture. Yes, instead of reading for soc, I spent most of my day trying to get on the site. I haven't been this excited about anything Simpson related in over a decade. I'm hoping that in a couple hours the traffic will subside. I will post the picture as soon as I get it.

$1 a game

Bowling alleys must be hurting this summer because they are offering games for $2.50 on Saturdays and $1.00 on Sunday evenings. They still get you to spend $3.00 to rent shoes but it is a heck of a deal. I was surprised to see the parking lot was almost empty. How could people pass this up?! We had a great time. I did really well the first game but then got progressively worse with each game that followed. Jason did much better than he has ever done averaging 55. Devin and David improved with each game. Devin bowled 104 the last game. That is his highest score to date! I was very proud. By the 7th frame of our third game the alley was packed and it felt like an oven. I was very impressed with the young people surrounding us. There were several teenagers and young adults who were very polite and well behaved. I always think of these moments when people complain about kids today.

I think we will be bowling on Sundays for as long as the deal is on. I am seriously thinking of buying my own ball and shoes. While I do not think it will improve my performance, at least I know where they have been.

The Godfather trilogy aired!

Over the past couple of days AMC has aired the entire Godfather trilogy. For those of you not familiar with my previous Godfather post, I am a fan of all three movies. Usually they only play I and II. It makes me crazy. I was pleasantly surprised when David was slipping through the guide and found them all. Today we caught the third half way through. The final scene, when Mary dies, still covers me in goose bumps. David looked at me and said,"Are you crying?! Geezzzz." I was NOT crying....I was sobbing. No other scene in the trilogy can do that to me. And yes, it now gets three stars! Ha! Proof that someone is reading my blog. :)

The Long Hot Summer - "just skittish Mr. Quick..."

The Long Hot Summer - store scene

little sticks everywhere

CD player, party, and uncle

Well, the dealer finally fixed my cd player. There was a moment when I thought it still was not functioning properly, but then I realized the reason I couldn't go to the next cd was I had not put them pack in the player. Sigh....

Saturday we went to our niece's first birthday party. The dark clouds loomed the entire day. Our youngest niece, Casey's baby girl, is the most adorable creature. She smiled and laughed. She escaped under the present table as her parents were working their way through the pile. There she played with a ribbon and giggled as Jason danced like a goofball for her. She does this cute little army crawl on the grass. She does a normal one on the carpet and floor. After crawling on the grass after her I see why. There are little sticks everywhere. One dug a little hole in my knee. She's a smart cookie. The party was at my dad's house in the booneys. The kids played football, baseball, and with the Super Soakers. Devin decided at one point to put pop in one of them. Grrr....I love seeing my family. They are very easy going and fun to hang out with. L didn't know what to do with her cake. She rubbed most of it on her dad. By the end, her face was completely covered in frosting which really ticked her off. Once she was clean she enjoyed her presents. She especially liked her new car. Laura gave her her cell phone. So while I pushed her around the yard she excitedly held out the phone. Casey's friend brought over her mini pony. The kids didn't seem to care. I thought it was cool. Laura, home for the summer from college, brought her boyfriend and best friend Lyndsey. I had never met her friend before. She is very nice. Learned a little bit more about her boyfriend Chris. He seems very down to earth. Jessie was up from Athens. The boys adore him. I think Jason tackled him on sight. He is great with kids. By the end of the day we were too tired to go down to the boat so now I owe the boys back to back weekends at the boat.

Today is a lazy day. We are beat from yesterday.

Side note: My Uncle has stage III colon cancer. He starts chemo soon.
